1999 John Deere 4600 4WD Tractor – Video

Ian Oakfields takes a closer look at a John Deere 4600 compact tractor, providing an overview of its specifications, features, condition, and mechanical performance.

Hello, it’s Ian Oakfields. This is our John Deere 4600 compact tractor, recording 4,180 hours and fitted with a Lewis Land Lugger front loader. Comes with this fairly recent bucket on there. The side panels on the engine are currently off because some of the tabs have snapped off, so they’re not staying on by themselves.

Overall, the tractor is pretty rough. There’s a fair bit of rust about it. But mechanically it does seem to be okay. It runs and drives, goes through all the gears no problem. The engine runs sweet, starts straight up.

You can see the front tyres are quite badly worn. The front tyres are getting down and are fairly perished. The rear tyres are very good.

Missing one of the side windows here as well.

So fitted with 540, 540 eco rear PTO, one spool, road registered.

So, it’s a four-cylinder diesel. I believe they’re a 2.2 L. I’d have to confirm.

So fitted with a crawler gear and you’ve got three ranges, four gears and then a hydraulic shuttle. So clutchless forward to reverse, which is quite handy with the loader.

So that is your linkage controls there.

And then this is the joystick for the loader.

So there you go. Recording 4,180 hours.

The PTO is controlled by an electric switch at the door position.

The cab is fitted with heating. However, we have not tested this. But there’s obviously a considerable amount of damp in the cab as you can see.

There we go. Not the prettiest tractor around. But mechanically seems to be sound. Good as a scraper tractor, for running up a topper, anything like that. Quite a handy little thing with a loader on it.
